Recording Sounds

For my film, the aspect of sound was a powerful component. Sound can help set a scene and tell a story. So the critical sounds of my movie are really somber and sad to fit the aesthetic. I wanted the audience to be able to hear their pain.

There is much more to sound than simply the music or the backtrack. Sound includes the dialogue between the characters when they interact and simple background noises, from pattering feet to the faint sounds of rain in the distance.

It foreshadows the sadness that is to come. Therefore the audience expects a sad scene. It sets the tone and mood of the movie. The sound effects should make the audience feel empathetic. Appealing to their emotions and increasing their likelihood of wanting to re-watch the film.

When creating this, I didn’t want many conversations between the characters. Again, it was just a matter of perspective. I liked the world or my audience to see two very different sides of what depression can look like and the impact that it can have on a person.
